The MuLing Frames project

As part of the cooperation projects programme of the German National Research Data Infrastructure Consortium Text+, the Institut für Translatologie gGmbH conducted the MuLingFrames from January to September 2026 with LinguisticBits as additional contractor

The goal of the project is to develop a TEI 5 conforming XML format for multilingual Framenets. Two existing multilingual resources, the German-English-French(-Spanish) lexicon of soccer jargon Kicktionary and the pedagogical resource G-FOL for English-native learners of German are transferred into the new format.

Framenets currently predominantly exist in single languages. However, multilingual framenets are increasingly relevant, for instance in order to create cognitively and culturally sensitive language learning resources, compare the descriptions of images in multiple languages or evaluate machine translation systems. The MuLingFrames project alleviates the problem that to date, no standard conforming formats for multilingual frame-based data exists. The results of the project will be published under a non-commercial creative commons license.
